Rozella Thompson YMCA Site Coordinator Chaver's Community Center
Rozella is a major contributor to the Farrell community in the area of youth development. She has been a part of the Shenango Valley community her whole life, graduating from Farrell High School in 1964. She then graduated with a degree in Business from the Shenango Valley Commercial Institute, which is now known as the Business Institute of PA. She also studied Business Machines at the Mercer County Vo-Tech Institute, and studied Business at Youngstown State University.
Rozella is the Site Coordinator at the Chavers Community Center in Farrell, PA. This is a very important role in the community as the center provides a location for area youngsters to go during after school hours, and be stimulated in the areas of education, social interaction, and recreation. Rozella supervises this after school program and oversees the entire facility, including staff, volunteers, and the children. Rozella has proven to be very creative in her methods of recruiting children to the center, and providing them with fun activities to participate in during the program. She develops activities and programs that focus on the core principles of the YMCA which are honesty, respect, caring, and responsibility.
Rozella was employed by PA Bell in Sharon, PA as a telephone operator. Later she was transferred to Youngstown, OH and employed by Ohio Bell. During her time with Ohio Bell, Rozella was promoted on several occasions. She retired as Administrative Specialist after 30 years of service. She then was employed as a bus monitor by the Farrell School System.
Rozella enjoys being a prominent component of the community. While employed by Ohio Bell, she belonged to the "Just Say No" program, teaching about the harms of drugs to over 300 kids in the Youngstown-Columbiana Counties. Additionally, Rozella was President of the local union in Sharon, plus she was the Election Clerk for the Union in Youngstown, trainer of By-Laws, and taught by former Congressman Traficant.
Additionally, Rozella has done community service for Nugent Nursing Home, and is very involved with her church. She is a former trustee of the church and belongs to a program called "Caring and Sharing" that makes sure people have food for their family during holiday seasons. Rozella’s hobbies include bowling, decorating, reading, and planting flowers. She also loves to travel.
